XXL Mappa Puffer!

Two days ago, we got in a huge XXL show-size Mappa Puffer. This fish is absolutely gorgeous and has a ton of personality. He has not stopped swimming right in front of the glass since we put him in the tank. He is not not exhibiting any heavy breathing, and is eating krill and squid. We know that many of our customers have 400+ gallon fish only aquariums. For those interested, He is selling for $399.99.

We know that there has not been any updates in a while, so in light of that, here are some pictures I have collected from the last month or so of some of the stuff we have had in stock.

You can see pictures of some of the many awesome corals we have had in stock, as well as some of our beautiful fish as well!

Below is a shot of two of our many acroporas.

Every week, we get a lot of healthy, robust sponges. We also get a lot of vibrant LPS and zoanthids (halloween zoas in 3rd pic)!

Blowout sale

We would like to thank everyone who came out for our annual blowout sale. It was a very busy day but everything went very well, and it was a very fun day for all involved.

We raffled off a ton of great items, some of which included a Red Sea Max complete set-up, a 75 gallon fish tank, a Sera nano cube, a UV sterilizer, filters, and so much more. All raffle winners will be called today.

New Products at The Hidden Reef

As a bit of variety, I thought we would highlight some of the new products The Hidden Reef now sells. We are always posting the fish and livestock that we have in, and we always have a great variety in that department, but we hardly ever showcase all of the different products we regularly get in stock.

For example, those looking to get an aquarium have so many more options than they ever did before. We have a ton of new and exciting choices for aquarium set-ups. If you are looking to get a nano aquarium, both the JBJ HQI nano and the Red Sea Max are fantastic choices. The JBJ Nano (right) allows the aquarist to keep practically any kind of coral that they'd like, since the 28 gallon tank has a 150 watt HQI metal halide built into the hood. The Red Sea 34 gallon Max (left) is a nice nano because it offers a tank where everything is built right into, all the way down to the electrical plugs. Finally, a tank that is totally enclosed so that no wires are ever exposed or seen by the on-looking eye.

Maybe you are looking to jump into something a little bigger and simpler. Well, look no further, Fluval has put out a gorgeous tank where everything is included and built in. Their 44 gallon Vicenza aquarium (right) is pre-drilled to fit the Fluval cannister filter that comes included with the aquarium. It also comes included with built in T-5 lighting, a heater, timers for the lights, and everything else you would need to start your aquarium. This is perfect for a beginner's reef, planted aquarium, or just your casual community aquarium.

Lastly, maybe you are looking for a serious upgrade and want something bigger, without going custom and paying a ton of money. Staying with its "Smart Design" slogan, Marineland has just come up with three aquariums that are gorgeous and backed with a lot of thought. Instead of the typical tank that is long and tall, Marineland's new tanks are incredibly WIDE. All of their tanks are three feet wide, making for a perfect reef aquarium that allows the aquarist so much needed depth for rock placement and fish activity. Marineland has come out with a 150 gallon (3' x 3'), 200 gallon (4' x 3'), and a very impressive 300 gallon (6' x 3'), pictured to the left. On top of their new aquariums, Marineland has come out with a new line of protein skimmers and submersible pumps. Their skimmers are sleeker so that no longer does your protein skimmer take up all of your space in your sump. Their pumps are the first of its kind to already come with all of the plumbing you need to hook it up out of the box.

The Hidden Reef also stocks a lot of new and innovative additives for your aquarium. We now offer the full lines of both Zeovit and Prodibio, two lines that are innovative and that truly work. Protobio offers products for not only saltwater, but also for freshwater fish and planted aquariums. Zeovit offers exclusive products that make an incredible impact on reef aquariums and corals.

There is also a new line of medications out that really works. If your fish have parasites, bacterial infections, fungal infection, etc., this new line of medications is what you should try. Aquarium Muenster makes a line of medications that is safe for fish, inverts, and corals. So far, of the people who have tried it, all have claimed tremendous success with it. There are a lot of new pieces of equipment for your aquarium as well. Starting with filters, I don't think too much can come close to topping the Fluval FX5 filter. This is a canister filter that quietly pumps 900 gallons per hour. Quite a powerful filter that will easily handle a 200 gallon aquarium, and the best part, it is extremely affordable as well! It also comes with "smart chip" technology that shuts the canister off every 24 hours to allow any built-up gases to leave the canister and not get dumped back into the aquarium or build up in the canister.

Powerheads have come a long way, as well. Hydor now has 9 magnetic powerheads available, ranging from as small as the nano at 240 gallons per hour all the way up to the Koralia 8 that pumps a massive 3,250 gallons per hour!!! These powerheads have a lot of great features. They are adjustable to pump in any direction, they are magnetic, which means no more suction cups, and they are very inexpensive. UV sterilizers are another product that have made an innovative change. JBJ has come out with a submersable UV sterilizer powerhead that allows you to easily install a UV sterilizer on any aquarium. Forget about green water issues, these UV sterilizers can be hooked up to your aquarium within minutes of coming out of the box. No extra pump is needed, no tubing. Just take it out of the box, put it in your tank or sump, and it is ready to go. Currently, there is a 5 watt and a 7 watt, giving every aquarist a very affordable option of UV sterilization. The sterilizers come with suction cups so that you can stick it in the corner of your tank or suction it to the bottom of your wet/dry or sump.

We found a phenomenal supplier for African cichlids who specializes in tank raised Africans. The Africans we got in include Tropheus duboisis, tropheus yellow sides, cyphy frontosa, tropheus moori, julii burundis, super red pulcher kribensis (not an African, however), and a few other different species. A few quick updates!

On top of our normal saltwater shipment that we got on Monday, The Hidden Reef has a lot more going on for this week.

-In the freshwater order we received yesterday, we got algae eating shrimp, cherry shrimp, and over 100 aquatic plants. We still have 24k gold tetras in stock, black ghost knives, and some very nice German blue rams and apistos!

-We also received some huge hyacinth pond plants, as well as some gorgeous pond lettuce plants.

-Lastly, we finally have tadpoles and betta fish back in stock too! We know that many people were looking for these and we finally were able to get them in for you.

-This week, we will have a large order of tigger pods coming in, along with a huge saltwater tank raised fish and invertebrate order!

Summer Time Sweetness!

This summer may have started off with a declining economy and higher gas prices, but the Hidden Reef is rewarding all of its loyal shoppers who keep coming back! As a way to thank all of our customers for their continued and constant shopping at our store, we have been running some very nice sales each and every week.

Over the past four weeks, the sales have been unbeatable. It all started the week leading up to the 4th of July when we had purple tangs at 69.99, maroon clowns at 12.99 and firefish at 3.99. Then, we had a sale on baby clown triggers (14.99) and our explosive koi sale over the 4th of July. The following week, we had sales on clean-up crews, where we had blue leg hermit crabs at .39, Mexican turbo snail sales where you could get 10 large for 14.99, and large bubble tip anemones at 14.99, as well as sales on acros, zoas, and frags. Last week, we put a sale up on flame angels, where they sold for 24.99, and black cap basslets at 24.99 also. This week, the sales continue. We have baby kole tangs at 12.99 and coral cats at 4.99. You can't beat these prices and they are going to keep going on each week.

Also, as a little disclaimer, I wouldn't want you to be fooled. Most places that run sales only bring in a few of the particular sale item to mislead and trick consumers. We're not doing that. When we have sales, we have enough so that the people who want them, get them. We had over 300 blue leg hermits for the .39 sale, 15 flame angels last week, 15 clown triggers the week before, and this week, we have 12 baby kole tangs and many coral cats. Come on over and check us out, you will not be disappointed.

Before we begin this blog post, I just want to thank everyone who came out to celebrate the fourth of July with The Hidden Reef! We had a very busy weekend and we want to thank you for all of the support. We blew out all of the ridiculously cheap purple tangs and firefish we had and the comets and koi we had for sale flew out of the tanks also!

Rest assured though, if you missed us last week, we have some new sales for this week!

As far as fish, we have some really nice sales going on this week. We have juvenile clown triggers going for only 14.99! If you ever had the urge to set up a little fish only with live rock tank for one of these little guys, this week is the time to do it! These guys usually cost anywhere from $40 to $70! Also, we have a beautiful black dogface puffer that is for sale this week as well. This week only, the black dogface will be only $99.99!!

The Hidden Reef is also running some awesome sales on inverts and clean-up crews as well. We have a ton of really nice green bubble tip anemones on sale for $14.99. We also have cleaner shrimp back in stock too, and they are going for $19.99.

With clean-up crews, we are running two really nice sales. We have a sale going on for Mexican turbo snails, where they are only $1.49 each. Better than that, we are running a one week only sale on blue leg hermit crabs. Usually, they are .99, but this week, you can get them for .69! On top of that, we are offering a great discount if you buy them in bulk. If you get at least ten, the price moves down to .39!! That means you can get 10 hermit crabs for just $4! That is a savings of 60% the regular price!!!

Tank Raised Fish and Coral

The Hidden Reef prides itself on carrying a very large selection of fish and corals that have been tank raised and/or tank bred. Of course, we carry all of the typical stuff like false percula clowns, tomato clowns, sebae clowns, black percula clowns, canary blennies, neon dottybacks, neon gobies and banggai cardinals. However, we also carry (and have IN STOCK) a lot of things that you do not typically see. Absolutely Incredible Coral Shipment This Week

While most shipments usually arrive very nice, with a few stunning pieces thrown in, there are not many that just leave you saying 'wow.' This is one of them. Just take a look at some of the corals below. The colors of the acros, birdsnest, lobophyllias and brains, milliporas, as well as the other SPS that came this week are just impressive. Freshwater Shipment

We got a lot of different freshwater stock in this week. Some of the unique things include freshwater whales, multi-color peacocks, yabby lobsters, and hatchet fish.

On top of that, we have in a bunch of nice larger cichlids as well. They include a black belt cichlid, red devil, and flowerhorn. We had seven beautiful albino oscars, but they all sold within two days.

The Hidden Reef has a ton of beautiful saltwater fish, but the freshwater stock is just as nice. Below you can see shots of our turtles, a picture of our flowerhorn, fancy plecos, koi, baby arrowanas, red severums, an albino polyterus, a ctenpoma, and our whispus pirahna.

We always have a ton of different freshwater stock, as well as all of the common platys, mollys, gourami's, tetras, cichlids, goldfish, and African cichlids. We also have a great stock of larger cichlids as well!!

We have received a very nice shipment of fish and corals tonight.

For anyone looking for some different freshwater stock:

-We have four different types of shrimp in stock. (Blueberry, bumblebee, amano, and zebra)

Debuting the New Pond Room

Beautiful new corals

We got a great new shipment of corals and saltwater fish yesterday. In that shipment, we got gorgeous frogspawn corals. All of them are muti-colored (purple and green) and two of them are tri-colored (pink, purple, green). All of the frogspawns are only $69.99!!

We also got really nice colored zoa polyps, small Maxima clams, hippo tangs, and a bunch of very nice wrasses!!

We had a little extra free time tonight so we decided to snag some photos of the many nice corals we currently have in stock in the store. Below, you can see pictures of our green duncan coral, some of our acro's, a red star favia, a blue staghorn, a very large hammer coral, a few orange sponge corals, many colorful and different zoanthid polyps, a large colony of red micromussa, 4 small ORA aquacultured clams (2 squamosa and 2 maximas - only $30 each), some beautiful red favia, tongue coral, some very nice scolymia, echinata coral, Australian tracyphyllia, green bubble coral, ricordia yumas (both orange and green/blue), orange sun polyps, crocea and deresa clams, neon green clove polyps, and a huge assortment of nice mushroom rocks. New Corals

We got a great selection of corals in on Monday to finish off the shipments. We got table top acros, large colonies of purples and green acros, one green ducanopsammia, 3 large sun polyps, very nice orange and green zoa frags, two beautiful metallic hammers, orange and blue deresa clams, ORA squamosa and maxima clams, a very nice green chalice coral, loose pink ricordia mushrooms, two ricordia yumas (attached to rocks), and so much more!

We also got in some very nice pistol shrimp. Below I have the two types we got in. The first picture is of the blackberry pistol shrimp, and the second is the firecracker red pistol shrimp. We got 3 of each.

Saltwater Fish

On top of the really nice koi we got in on Monday, we also got a very nice freshwater fish order. In that, we got 8 types of tetras, 3 types of barbs, nice dwarf gouramis, and the fish pictured below. The fancy guppies came in very color and larger, we got in both spotted puffers and Indian freshwater puffers, and we also got gorgeous African peacocks, both large and small (both pictured below).

Off the top of my head, we got in nice mangrove plants, a really neat pack of 5 tiger anthias, more small and medium hippo tangs, another beautiful magnificient foxface, 2 beautiful large naso tangs (one blonde, one regular), small and medium yellow tangs, a few very nice leopard wrasses, small spiny puffers, coral beauty and flame angels, and so much more.

New Products

Due to an incredible amount of customer inquiry, we just wanted to inform everyone that we now have eductors and refractometers in stock! In case you do not know what either of them do, an eductor is something that hooks onto the nozzle of your return (from your pump) to increase the amount of flow from your pump. They come in sizes 1/2", 3/4", and 1".

A refractomter is something that very accurately measures the salinity of your saltwater. They are an absolute necessity to anyone who plans to keep a successful saltwater aquarium. Plus, unlike hydrometers, they are alwayes accurate and never have to be replaced.

The refractometers are going for $71.99, and the eductors are going for $23.99.

Blue Mushrooms In Stock

Just thought I would post that we have some gorgeous blue mushrooms now in stock. There are three blue mushroom rocks. One is $59.99 and the other two are $69.00. The first picture below is of the mushrooms closed, and the second two are from an hour later when they opened. Each rock has about 50 mushrooms on it, with the largest rock having about 60. Also, don't forget to check back because we will be getting our shipment tomorrow of fresh and saltwater.

A New and Interesting Fish at The Reef

On top of all of your favorite fish like yellow tangs and sixline wrasses, The Hidden Reef is known for being an industry leader at bringing in and stocking different fish. This past week, we got a really interesting fish called an inkspot trigger. This guy is a decent size (4"-5"), has nice colors, and has a ton of personality. We have yet to find a latin name for this animal so that we can do some research on his behavior and needs, but if anyone knows, feel free to post in a comment at the bottom of this post.

New Monday Shipment

We received both saltwater and freshwater shipments today. Since the freshwater arrived late, I did not get to snap any shots of them. However, we got in some really nice African peacock cichlids from Lake Malawi, purple parrots, clown loaches, assorted mollies and fancy guppies, silver arrowanas, and rummy nose tetras.

In the saltwater order, we finally got cleaner shrimp and fire shrimp back in stock. We also got that awesome angler that you see to the right. He was so large that he just had to go into the show tank with our Japanese Dragon Eel. This angler is easily the size of a small football. On top of that, we got:

West African shipment

We received a gorgeous shipment of saltwater fish and live rock from West Africa. I took some pics to show you how nice this stuff came in. It really is beautiful. The live rock pictured to the left is going for $7.99 per pound. It has beautiful oranges, purples, greens, and pinks on it. It is well worth the price if you are looking for some nice live rock. Get it while you can, however. We only ordered 150 lbs. of it on this shipment, but if everyone likes it and it sells well, we will bring more in!

We also got in some beautiful bimac anthias. That pair is going for $109.99. There is a picture of the male bimac below.

On top of that, we got in gorgeous niger triggers that have a bright blue outline, very nice juvenile coris wrasses, a west African toby puffer that is very cool looking (pictured below), and other very nice looking fish!

A trip down memory lane

The Hidden Reef started as a small, 1400 square foot aquarium shop in Northeast Philadelphia. It was everyone's favorite little hidden place in the northeast shopping center. It was quite a small store, but it was packed with a lot of greatness. After 10 years of being there, a fire, unfortunately, led to the demise of that store. However, we are now, back up and running at a much larger, 20,000 square foot store in Levittown, PA. This store is just 15-20 minutes from our old location.

Though our location may have changed, and our store may be much larger now, and there may be many new faces working at the store, our core foundation remains strong. We are a store that operates because of you. We care about our customers more than anything, and for this reason, we offer only the highest quality fish and livestock, as well as the lowest prices on all of our aquariums and dry goods!!

Freshwater Fish

On top of having one of the largest saltwater stocks in Pennsylvania, we also have a very large selection of freshwater fish, both large and small. Our selection ranges from goldfish, angels, discus, African and South American cichlids, live bearers, gouramis, barbs and much more!!

We also stock large freshwater fish. In the store right now, we have large oscars, large pacus, large red devils and butterkoferi's, a huge albino pleco, large parrotfish, and oh yeah, that big guy pictured to the right (our arrowana) All of these fish are for sale at very low prices.

We were always known for getting in fish that were "different" and that you really did not see anywhere else. On top of your typical fare like PJ and Banggai Cardinals, Royal Grammas, Six Line Wrasses, etc.; we also get a fair share of rare fish as well. Right now, in the store, we have 3 stripey microcanthus, a gold back trigger, a gold heart trigger, an akindynos clown from Australia, a beautiful pair of allard's clowns from Africa, a male flame wrasse, exquisite wrasses, and Newton's wrasses.

In the recent past, we have had helfrichi firefish, black tangs, blue carpet anemones, rhombadalus wrasses, mystery wrasses, and much more!!

At The Hidden Reef, our invertebrate section is always stocked with the animals that you want for your tank.
